Mark 3 Ignition Please Help

Unfortunately this will be a long post but I feel that to get the best advice I need to explain the situation completely. We are in France so another garage doesn't seem to be an option.

  1. The car was running well but appeared to be using a lot of petrol. I asked my husband to take it to the garage to get it tuned.

  2. The ignition switch was not returning on the spring after starting and he forgot to turn it back slightly

  3. The car misfired a little on going to the garage then seemed ok. My husband stopped to get petrol then on trying to start nothing.

  4. The car was pushed to the garage who said it was the solenoid but that they needed a new ignition switch (it is a mark 3) so problems with getting a second hand one. I eventually managed to get 2 both of these the garage said were not working.

  5. After 5 months we decided to take the car from the garage, and it was brought home on a tow truck.

 

The car has an alternator.

 

Present situation, the car wont start. New solenoid is dangling in mid-air but connected as follows: 4 wires going to one screw terminal brown and blue,thicker brown wire,thin brown wire and a very thick black. There is a thick black wire going to the other terminal and a thin red and white wire on a spade connector. There is also another thickish brown wire dangling in mid air.

 

One of the ignition switches appears to be partially connected, not sure whether this is correct or not, the other is in the car. Coming into the ignition switch from the dash there is a red and white wire, a brown wire and 2 white wires joined together. From the ignition switch there is a brown wire, 2 separate white wires a white and red wire and a green and white wire. Not sure how these go together.

 

Whilst we were in the garage one of the mechanics came over and did something under the bonnet that made the car turn over but it didn't start.

Can you post some photos up of the solenoid and ignition switch plus wiring, etc to help forum members understand the problems in more detail?

As above pictures would be helpful. Also if you start playing with the wires to the solenoid just bear in mind the one from the battery is live so be careful not to arc it out on anything, assuming the battery is connected.

Starting with he solenoid.

 

The solenoid body has to have an earth connection, so attach it to a good electrical earth point.

The white/red wire is the solenoid energise feed from the ignition switch and goes to the spade connector, presumably you only have one spade terminal on the solenoid.

The solenoid screw terminals are as follows.

On the terminal that has the batetry feed there should also be a brown/blue, this feeds the ignition switch, two thick brown wires, these go to the alternator, and the lighter brown wire that feeds the permanantly live fusebox terminal 1.

The other screw terminal should have one thick black feeding the starter motor.

 

On the ignition switch, and this is purely the ignition switch circuit.

 

A brown/blue live feed from the solenoid.

A White wire feeding the switched supply fusebox terminal 3.

A White wire for the ignition light.

A White/Red wire feeding the starter solenoid.

 

If you are not sure which wire goes where on your car , disconnect the battery and use a multimeter on the continuity range to trace each individual wire.

 

Connected as above the engine should at least turn over when the ignition key is operated and you will have to go from there.

Until you earth the solenoid nothing will happen when you turn the key to the start possition.

Thank you all will try to connect things tomorrow, take some pics and let you know what happens. In the meantime do you know if the thick black wire that attaches to the terminal with all the other wires could be an earth cable or is this what you are calling the battery feed. Sorry to be so thick.

In this case the thick cable on the solenoid terminal with all the wires has to be the battery feed, regardless of the cable colour, not the earth.

The earth connection for the engine maybe an uninsulated heavy wire going from the front subframe to one of the clutch cover bolts.

If the black wire is as thick as the one connected to the battery, you'll have answered your own question.

 

The solenoid won't work if it's hanging loose. It earths through the screws connecting it to the bodywork.

Thank you all so much. I took photos but now we dont need them as the car started when connected as explained. Now onto the stalk thing on the steering wheel to see what the garage did with that. Thanks again. Sue
