Does the advance weight mechanism for the 65D distr require lubricant and if so, what is best? A shot of WD40, white lithium grease, engine oil??

Thin oil ...

If the 65D is the same as older models there is a felt pad in the centre of the distributor shaft to take a few drops of oil. Think I used sewing machine oil in 70s .. as there was always a small bottle to hand near my Mum's sewing machine!

It's an interesting point. The advance mechanism is totally sealed in without disassembly.
