My 1991 Mini has an intermittent fault with the indicators. What's the likely diagnosis here?

If I indicate right, the lights always flash. If I indicate left they sometimes just illuminate and don't flash.

I've tried changing the flasher unit, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

The cancel never seems to work on left turns either, just on right. That may be a clue or a completely different issue.

Any ideas?

I'll most probably be the Indicator Switch itself.

I have resurrected a few flaky switches using this stuff: https://wd40.co.uk/p...ontact-cleaner/ . Spray in then operate the switch a few times. It's also handy for cleaning bulb and socket contacts, especially in partnership with a fibreglass "pen" contact-cleaner.

Another thing to check is the earth connections of the indicator lamps themselves.

You may have two seperate faults, a mechanical fault causing the self cancelling problem leading to an electrical switching fault.

To try and isolate the electrical fault you could link out the switch.

On the multiplug at the column that controls the indicators there should be a Light Green/White wire that is the switched feed for the indicator switch common terminal, a Green/Red wire that feeds the left indicator external lights and a Green/White for the right indicator light circuit.

With the ignition switched on check for a live feed on the Light Green/ White, if there is link this terminal with the Green/Red wire on the plug and the left indicator external lamps should flash as normal if there no fault.

Similarly link the LightGreen/White wire to the Green/White wire and the right indicator external lamps should flash as normal.

Dependant on the results of these tests will show you where your fault is, either the external wiring/ lampholders/bulbs or the switch.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

It turns out that the left front bulb wasn't illuminating, due to dodgy contact. Bulb is OK, and wiggling it about made it all work. I think it's a fairly new bulb holder, so I shall have to have a good look at it. I've shoved a bit of plastic in there to force the bulb to make contact for now.

As for the self cancelling thing, I shall have to buy another switch.

As for the self cancelling thing, I shall have to buy another switch.

My second car was a Citroen GS... built from factory with no self-cancelling on the indicators. What a joyous revelation that was. Every car I bought after that, up until airbags fitted in the steering wheel made it difficult to safely get access, I whipped off the steering wheel and removed the 'nub' that actuated the self-cancelling feature bug.

On early columns, at least, the 'nub' is a screw with a locknut, screwed into a threaded hole on the column. You might find you can restore your self-cancelling bug by slightly unscrewing the screw and locking it with slightly more stick-out. Be careful, of course, that it doesn't foul anything and restrict column motion.

The self cancelling ring on the switch maybe 180 degrees rotated try moving it 180 degrees and see if that works both sides  - I found this by accident  - random I know but one way it works both sides and the other way it only works one side (no idea why never delved into it to understand.

Maybe its not the same on all switches?
