Hi. I have a 1980 mini which may have an original (or near) starter motor that I suspect is faulty (direct good battery to motor post and negative to body did nothing). I've taken it off (see photos). Is there point opening the motor to diagnose or outright replace? The photos show a lot of oily dirt. How is it best to clean this area before i refit? Any help would be great. Thanks

Ok if 12v to the terminal and a good earth on the hoop using are doing nothing. Just change it out.

brake cleaner or wd40 and a rag for cleaning up.

Test it outside of the mini like you got it now (preferably clamped down), connect the leads and see if it works. disconnect, turn it a bit and see if it starts again.

Take it to an old auto electrician and they'll be able to fix (and test) it easily or do it yourself if you want but you'll be guessing without a growler etc.
