Good morning all,

We are very new to the auto mini world but not the manual mini world, (husband has a Sidewalk) and we have come across our first problem.  We have recently bought a 1995 mini sprite auto, 1.3 single point injection, we have changed the spark plugs, leads, distributer cap and rotor arm and oil and filter.  Now when it idles it is fine but getting into 1st gear there is a terrible grinding noise, the whole engine shakes, it is fine in all other gears.  this doesn't happen all the time, if I allow the car to creep for a second then accelerate slowly, it doesn't make the noise, but if I accelerate normally it does. It is worse if I am in an incline. we were advised to use the oil 10W-40 Motor engine oil semi synthetic 4-T 4-stroke API SN JASO MA2. It didn't make this noise before, so a bit stumped.  Can anyone advise please ??

Thank you.   :proud:

Are you following the special oil level checking procedure for the autos? Read the manual.

If the oil level is correct and the correct oil used as you've said, the forward clutch likely needs repair. Really the whole transmission should be rebuilt.

Before going that far, have a look at the auto troubleshooting section in the manual.

There's nothing wrong with these autos and they are worth rebuilding. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

There is also an Automatic Mini Forum which has some useful info and may also be of help, see link below.
