Hi everybody. 

 

I am currently interested in buying a Mini in Portugal, ( Im British. living here) it states its a 1966 mini Cooper 1000, bonnet has a Mini Cooper badge on it, and boot lid has a Speedwell badge on it, ive requested images of engine. Were there Factory Speedwell minis, or was it something done purely by the owners? 

 

Were Speedwell Minis sold in Europe ?

 

Who placed the Speedwell badges on the cars, owners or Speedwell when they tuned them ?

 

Sorry, last one, how can i tell if its been tuned etc, or somebody has just screwed a Speedwell badge to it. Thanks very much in advance for any assistance.  Oh, the can needs a full restoration.

There were no Factory Speedwell Minis. Speedwell was started by John Sprinzel and tuned A-Series engines and supplied aftermarket conversions, parts and accessories.

Before establishing whether it has speedwell tuning I'd be checking whether it's a genuine cooper. Plenty of guidance on this, MCR have a buyer's guide and there's John Parnells definitive text too. Is it a UK or local market car?
