Looking for someone with good electrics knowledge that can help me diagnose an issue as I have a wiring issue I need to fix.

ISSUE:

  • With the ignition on and headlight light switch completely off , The side lights on the driver side stay on both front and rear
  • If the ignition is off and side lights are turned on with the switch, The Passenger side light stays on both in front and rear
  • When engine is started and lights are off, The side lights on the driver side stay on both front and rear (Same as Point one above)
  • When the engine is on and light switches are turned on in any position, everything works as expected with no issues.

I have attached some images to help explain.

Attached File  Switch off, Ignition on.jpg   56.58K   1 downloads

Attached File  Switch on, Ignition off.jpg   80.91K   0 downloads

WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR TO DIAGNOSE:

  • Took off all the lights and made new connections to make sure there wasn't any bad connections
  • Checked all fuses behind the dash and under the bonnet
  • Replaced the headlight switch
  • Tried disconnecting the spot lights and indicators and checking to see if it still happened when these were disconnected
  • Switched the headlights around to see if it was an issue with the unit, It wasn't. Issue still happens the back right light so cant be an issue with the headlight unit itself.

NOTE: I am very bad at understanding electrics so please if you have any advice I will not be offended so don’t be afraid to explain step by step as if I am a 5 year old!

You ideally need to see what has power with the switch off, double check your wire colours match along the circuit (very easy to mix up) and whilst doing this check for damaged insulation.

Also remove the fuse box from the car and check the back of it for corrosion and damage

Thanks for the replies, the issue happened before I had the new led lights.

I have just installed a new fuse box and now the side light and rear light on the driver side don't work at all.

Everything else is working as normal so leaving it for now and at some point during the week I'm going to go through diagrams and follow all the wires relating to the passenger side light and rear light so hopefully will find the issue there

What year was it manufactured?

Obviously the Halos aren't original, but some later cars have a dim/dip relay that turns on the dipped beam (at half brightness) so you can't drive on sidelights only.

Again, on later cars, the sidelight circuit can be split with a separate fuse for each side - the one in the fusebox & a line fuse.

.... The fusebox fuse does the left side, along with the numberplate illum. red/black wire

The line fuse does the right side & dash illum. red/white wire - it could be a short or poor earth on the dash is allowing current to flow backwards to the right side & tail from another circuit at the dash The fuel & temp gauge voltage regulator (should be connected to the same earth, printed circuit) or the ignition light (shouldn't be earthed at all)

Thanks, it's a 1993 Mayfair so I believe the driver side lights are on a different circuit to the left.

How would I go about investigating if it's a poor earth like you have mentioned above?

You possibly have 2x sidelight and 2x headlight fuses behind the speedo binnacle.

Basically the left side lights are working correctly on the light switch and the  right side lights are turning on off with the ignition .My guess would be that under the dashboard above the steering column is a group of line fusses for the lights and also a line fuse for the stereo. Does the stereo only work when the light switch is on, if so somebody has swapped the feed half of the two fuses.

You should kept posting in your original thread, it saves confusion and repetition.

If it was a poor earth it would be forcing the other circuits to earth via dash illumination bulbs then the side & tail. I don't think it's too likely as that would be a fair bit of resistance. I can't imagine a tail lamp bulb lighting with full brightness. If leds are involved your guess is as good as mine. Unplugging the dash multiplug would remove that possibility
