Clutch Housing

Best Answer Spider , 24 November 2024 - 01:32 AM

Yes , sorry.  I meant the transfer case and gearbox, were they machined as a unit , or was it always hit and miss ?

They are not matched;-

The only matched housings on these cars is the diff cap.

The flywheel / transfer housing locates on dowels and the factory considered that good enough, though, I would dispute that.

Was the Mini clutch housing machined along with the gearbox as a matching pair?

Is there any way of determining which would be the best ( with regard bearing alignment) housing to use from a selection?

Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about the transfer case to gearbox, although many have just swapped them without worrying about the alignment, there are several of us that align the transfer case and gearbox using dummy shafts/bearings and remachine the location posts so they align correctly.

There is an post somewhere by Spider which explains this but I can't find it at the moment.

First you need one that has the same idler bearing size as the gearbox. Then you need to make sure the breather opening is as required for your build. Some are open some are not. They can be opened.

in most cases you can just fit them with no worries. But it is not bad practice to check and align as needed.
