Is there a way to tell from looking at the timing cover if an engine has a duplex chain?

Well you could hazard a guess depending on the timing cover type and the engine size.

but they should have had the chains changed by now and you have no idea what was used it will still be guess work.

all the A plus covers with tensioners were simplex as original IIRC.

With internal modification. Not always externally visible.

There is one small dimple in the cover that needs knocking out, but otherwise, yes.

Thanks, a bash with a hammer is definitely the cost effective option.

Gentle taps are the way forward as you don't want to distort the gasket face of the cover or it will leak.

An alternative worth considering https://www.minispar...special-quality

A duplex has 50% more link, so simplex links only need to be 25% thicker, or stronger, to be as unstretchy.

There's also an IWIS chain available from KAD, Somerford....
