That's a £10k car in the current market. I had an SPI Cooper last year that had a £20k professional restoration, was not modified and £10k was all I could get for it, and even that was not a quick sale! That car has been advertised for a few months now...

 

with that level of restoration i'd have thought you would have people would biting your hand off for it. 

 

Maybe an unpopular view but for £13k I would be tempted to get 60/70s, historic status carb car. Unless you are wanting to do serious miles or everyday use as I think they will hold their value better if things turn for the worst with low emission laws and maintenance is certainly easier. I agree £10K if current trends are anything to go by.  

 

 

I have looked at 70s car but struggling to find anything that is rust free or doesn't need much work for similar money.

Hi All, after nearly 10 years without a Mini the time has come to get another, prices have certainly shot up in those last 10 years

I have seen a nice 1996 Cooper SPI, The car had a recommission 4 years ago with all rust cut out, some new panels, full respray, new rear subframe, and the bodywork is still rust free, with no underbody corrosion mentioned on the MOTs since the recommission.

I was wondering what a realistic price should be for the car ? as I think the seller is asking quite high, but that may well be the going rate now as I have been out of Minis for so long.

Unfortunately not, the owner was firm at the ansking price. Apparently he has been told it’s worth more so wasn’t willing to drop. It has been up for sale since July so suggests it is up for too much, I wasn’t willing to go upto asking especially based on the value some of you guys suggested.

That was a lot of work! I suspect that sort of level of commitment to project will soon be a thing of the past. Nice to see what was an everyday kept as it should be and not just another Cooper clone.

I’ve still been keeping an eye out, does anyone have any thoughts on Paul Higgs ?

He has what looks like a nice MPI for sale, good mileage, looks in good condition apart from the seam has cracked on the NS Wing to front panel and I think the price seems relatively reasonable from a dealer.

The value of anything is somewhere between what the seller wants and what a buyer will pay. The market drives this somewhat but is never a true vlue of the item.

I have no personal experience with Paul Higgs, but I know someone who bought a car from him 5 years ago, and it was fine. But like with everything, it’s down to the actual vehicle itself and how much it’s been looked after.

Re: that MPI. If it were me, I’d want the car on original alloys and arches, but maybe that’s your thing.
Also knowing people who have MPIs, they rust terribly, so I’d do a very thorough inspection on it.
Think of it this way, all minis will need bodywork at some point, and do you want to drive and enjoy, or get lumbered with it the hassle and cost.

Yes ive heard bad things about mpi’s and rust but took the view of if its lasted this long its probably had most of the rot cut out already, or maybe wishful thinking.

That is a good spot, I had noticed the seam has split on the NS front wing, also noticed what looks like maybe a rust hole on the OS sill near the rear wheel. Maybe I should stay clear of MPIs …
