Hello,

I am after templates, if anyone has them, of the OEM style dash shelf bottom and back 'cardboard' which goes around the centre speedo (Speedo, Oil Pressure, Temp) binnacle from a MK4.

I am wanting to get a template to make a new shelf and backing, and cover it in vinyl etc. The ones in my mini were completely shot and I cant even template them.

I am not after a dash like the modern minis, just after the cardboard like pieces which make up the bottom and back of the shelf around the speedo.

It looks like you can still buy them new from Minispares, but I am in New Zealand and expensive to buy and send some cardboard for 60 pounds shipping.

Does anyone happen to have a template by chance?

1978 Morris Mini 1000.

I know there are tons of posts and stickys about dashes etc, but nearly all of the links are broken, and most of them seem to be about the modern style dash rather than the cardboard shelf items, I have been searching for a while but havent found what I am looking for.

thanks in advance

Hopefully, someone will have a pattern ready for you. If not... this is how I take measurements from small flat objects so I can draw a copy in CAD ready for CNC'ing.

It's a panel of clear polycarb I've engraved with 1cm squares, laid over the part. There are two ways to use it:

(1) Read off the X,Y positions of all the corners and maybe a dozen points along each of the edges/curves/creases. Plot them as points in your favourite CAD package. Draw splines through a few (not all) of the points along each edge. Adjust each spline to best-fit all the other points along the same edge. Convert the bunch of splines to a single polyline. Cut with flat-bed CNC or laser.

(2) Import the whole picture into your favourite image-processing package. Warp the image as necessary to remove distortion so that all the squares are the same size and are actually square. Import the straightened image into a CAD package. Draw around the edges using splines/lines/arcs as appropriate.

Generally I cut from cardboard first, try it and make any necessary small alterations, then cut the final part from millboard or 1.5mm PVC sheet.

The part here is from a MkII oval-binnacle dash.
