As above, I have the easy bolts out, and have read to remove the bolts on the engine mount, and lift the engine a bit. Is this to allow access from the underside or top of engine bay? As the jack will get right in my way from under...!

You need to lift it to get the wok out from above.

Yep, I still have 2 bolts right at the bottom that seem to be inaccessible, the Haynes book says to remove the mount and jack up engine a bit to gain access. I was wandering if access to undo the bolts is from the top or bottom of car. Its going to be awkward whatever I think!!

65 years ago, I drove the front wheels up onto two car ramps.

Put a 6 foot length of scaffold board under the sump and chocked it up, under the footwell, then lifted the end in front of the car and rolled a log under it with my foot.

Presuming that you are talking about the 6 and 7 o'clock bolts, then I used to drill a hole through the subframe in the right places big enough to get a 3/8 drive socket through. And if I'm being honest again I will do the same on my MK1 when I change the engine this year, saves all the agro. If you are doing a clutch change in car a lot of people just leave the 7 o'clock bolt out.

Bend a spanner to fit.

I remove all bolts from on top, except for the one in the 6 o'clock position. Remove the two engine mount bolts from the subframe, (you may need to disconnect the upper and lower stabilisers if fitted too) jack the engine up an inch or so and use the ring end of a combination spanner on the bottom bolt. Sometimes easier to get the spanner up between the battery cable and the subframe to get the spanner more squarely on the bolt head. Crack the bolt off and wind it out with your finger tips.
