'Course... there's a steering wheel fitted at the other end of the column... and I imagine that, with all the many external changes to the appearance your car, it also doesn't have an original steering wheel? Might be as simple as someone fitted a badly worn aftermarket boss. Or a boss that's not right for a Mini. Though I'd still want to check the bottom of the column is fitted correctly - it's pretty easy to get it wrong and not notice it.
