Hello everyone,

I recently became the proud owner of a 1996, 35 year anniversary mini but on occasion when slowing down at a junction or roundabout the engine is just cutting out. Similar to stalling but absolutely silently. Usually the engine starts back up again but last time it didn’t and now it just won’t start at all.

Before I bought it, it had been garaged for about 10 years and hardly driven so perhaps this has something to do to do with it?

Anyway he will now be going to the garage but in the meantime any insights welcome!

Thank you 😊

That could be one of many different faults

I had something similar when my battery died, with some RPM there was enough power from the alternator to keep it running, but once it went back to idle it would just stop. Can you check what voltage your battery is at rest, and also the voltage while it’s running? If it’s the same battery that sat for 10 years it’s likely dead.

Check if the battery cable has worn through the insulation near the engine. I had worn engine mounts which meant when engine breaking down through the gears it would push the exhaust onto the cable. Melts the insulation and then shorts everything out. Engine cuts out. Worth a look.

You mention that the car had been parked 10 years before you bought it. What steps did you take before you started driving it? What kind of inspection, maintenance and/or repairs did you do before the first drive?
