Good afternoon all, I have looked for the answer but can’t find it or any decent images either. I have my steering column off and am repairing some nicked wires and shoddy previous fixes. The problem is I have a black wire and I don’t know where it should go, it is on the same connector as a purple wire. There is a witness mark on the stalk itself like it was attached there but I can’t see why it would be. Can anyone shed some light please? It is a 1981 van. I’m trying to upload a picture but not having much luck.

The purple is the headlight flasher supply. It looks like somebody has attempted to solder the black wire to the stalk as a repair to the horn push. That is how the horn push works - a  wire runs up the stalk & when you press the end it shorts on the metal tube of the stalk. The solid purple is a permanent fused live for the flasher & horn. The Blue/white connects it (or the blue) to high beam & the purple/black goes to the horn.

A mechanical connection could be better than solder, some sort of clamp.

Lateral Thinking....

wire threaded in place of the nail, bared end against the stalk inside the clip???

I haven't done any measuring

I’ll have a look but have been thinking more small pipe clips or jubilee clips. Will let you know what I decide!

Obvs there'll be no sliding it on from the end.

They were originally soldered, I believe, but that holds the wire too rigidly. Then the wire strands fatigue right where they enter the solder. Ideally, you'd support the wire so the sheathing takes the strain.

I haven't got one to hand but if I remember correctly the stalk has a splined end that is push fit into the plastic that rotates up and down. the end of the wire is flattened and pushed in with the stalk. The black wire in the photo looks short and will need to be extended.
