I've just received one from eBay and when the dial is zeroed and the plunger depressed the gauge returns to any random number except zero 😳
So that's on its way back!

I'd start with a reputable seller, someone like H Roberts and sons, and have a look at what they stock at the cheaper end of their range
i'd recommend getting a DTI extension piece (4"/100mm) at the same time as they come in handy for some jobs

While the one you have sounds like a POS, I can't think of a reason you need or want to start from an open zero setting.I always put a bit of load on and move the dial round to zero, or if you go for a fancy dan LCD version they have a zero button. A good solid stand makes a world of difference.
Shooter
I agree with what your saying shooter. I never even got to use it on a job just the initial unboxing and playing with set the tone of the whole shaboodle!
A closer look shows the plunger is binding in the case on return which explains the random numbers.

Starett or Mitutoyo.
Some may say they are 'dear' but I would disagree. Even for the guy at home, you need instruments and measuring gear you can rely on and trust, otherwise, it leads to expensive and time consuming mistakes. I've had the frustration of trying cheaper gear, which wasn't that much cheaper.
