today my gearbox started to get hard to get into any gear more so 1st and 2nd but 3rd, 4th and reverse also difficult. it goes into all gears fine with engine off

if im in gear the clutch seems to be working fine, so can engage/disengage clutch and drive, it drives perfectly fine once in gear. i have read many forums this evening saying if it will go in gear with engine off then its the clutch but i think im right in saying it cant be the clutch as when im in gear i can disengage the clutch and roll/stop and then engage the clutch and start to drive off as normal. also for info its a verto style clutch and ive checked oil level and plenty of oil.

any help and advice on this would be great. thanks

It only takes a very slight drag in the clutch to overcome the synchro's efforts to match the speeds of the gears before engagement. And since it's bad in all gears, really the only common factor is clutch (or primary gear). Maybe check the adjustment of the stop-nut (the shaft of an appropriate-sized drill-bit serves as a make-do feeler-gauge for it) then get someone to press the pedal while you see if you're even getting the full travel: if the nut doesn't hit the housing, there's probably the issue. Mine was dragging very slightly at the book setting for the stopnut, so I backed-off the nut half a turn and got a better gearchange.

Thanks i will check, i did get a mte to press the clutch and the stop-nut looked about 3-4mm away from the housing, not sure how far it was before so hard to tell if it is any different, i maybe wrong but i didnt think the verto clutch had any adjustments so adjusting the stop nut wont make any differance? maybe my clutch plate is just worn then?

The stop nuts should be about 6.5 mm from the housing with the pedal raised.  Check what it actually is because if it's correct but only moves 2-3 mm when the pedal is down something could well be worn in the actuating levers or the hydraulics could be faulty.  You are correct that there is no adjustment on a verto clutch - the stop nut is just to prevent the clutch overthrowing.

It does sound clutch related to me,

The 'litmus' test for clutch operation is selecting reverse. When warmed up and stationary, if you can depress the clutch and select reverse without it grinding in, it may give a small noise, but not be a dragged out grinding then the clutch is working.

trying to get reverse is also very crunchy, the clutch has some odd wear on the springs, like they have been rubbing againt something? also the bushing on the promary gear looks real bad! it was spinning ok on the crank tail but not easy to remove! see the pics, ive ordered new clutch and drop gear set. hopefully it will solve the issues, luckily the crank tail is fine and no scratches or marks
