1992 mini Mayfair just coming to the end of a ground up restoration trying to reverse the car out of the garage and I couldn’t engage reverse gear when the engine was apart had a good look at the box and everything seemed good so didn’t touch it any suggestions really hope I haven’t got to take engine out
I can engage all forward gears though everything seems towards the right hand side on the gear change . Lifted the gear stick ok pulled it to the right and then back always engages fourth

Try it with taking the plate off the bottom of the shifter.

If you can select Reverse OK, then grind a small bit off the bottom of the Gearstick.

I wonder if the selector rod has spun round so eyelet is in wrong position in the rod change housing?
When you take the plate off as Spider suggests, see if the eyelet is over the line of the rod or below (it should be below)

x2… speaking from experience.

Do the reverse lamps work? another sign that the rod was flipped

Thanks for all your help the connection in the shifter box was upside down just needed turning 180 degrees Thanks
