As per the post title I can get my hands on a 1300 austin motor out of a 1973 austin 1300 sedan.

How straightforward is a 998 swap and what issues would I run into?

if anyone's done this and can provide thorough details that would be really appreciated.

Your main issue will be the diff ratio is likely wrong for a mini. That’ll need to be changed

There are differences with brackets like the timing cover backing plate and I’m assuming the radiator bracket

What gear shift system does it have? Rod change or the 1300 type remote?

Best option would be to keep the original gearbox and fit the 1300 engine onto it.
You will probably need a new set of drop gears, but you can check this out when it’s in pieces.
It would be wise to check the gearbox and diff for wear and replace any worn parts.
You might want to check/replace the crankshaft bearings, oil pump and timing chain as well as that’s easy whilst the engine is off the gearbox.
