Mk1 Grille Whiskers Fitting

Best Answer Rubbershorts , 23 May 2025 - 05:26 AM
Just an update on this with an alternative solution people may find handy. I riv nutted the fixings, and floated them off the body with plastic washers so when sliding the 'tache on it doesn't touch the body. 3mm rivnuts, 3mm stainless screws, M4 by 8x1 plastic washers. I only used two clips per side. Greased the back of the mustache and slid it into place. It's now easily removable. Daz.

The clips are riveted to the body and the trim is push on from the front. They’re a very tight fit.
Cheers Tupers. They do indeed look as if they will be tight. May be a stupid question but which way are the clips to be orientated? Open end to the body, or facing the clip?

This Mk1 Forum thread linked below is very useful for whisker fitting instructions as it can be very tricky to do well, some prefer making bolt on clips to prevent paint damage, etc as detailed in the thread.....but to access the 'Technical Talk' section of the Mk1 Forum you need to register:-

I filled the back of my grill trims with clear silicon and held them inplace with masking tape until set. This worked well for me and with no holes needed for clips thus preventing the potential for rust.

Stupid question, but does the silicone hold them securely? Thanks, Daz.
