Hi all
Not been on this forum for years. I've pulled the blankets off her and am looking at the options for getting it MOT'd this year (last on the road in 2019).
I knew water was getting in somewhere, as on the rare occation it went out in the wet, the driver footwell would get wet. I then found the rot, fully opening it up and she's not moved since.
In the image below, you can see the rot in the lower section of the panel, around the hinge plate and below. However everthing above that is sound. So I'm just seeing what people think as to if a repair can be carried out without removing the A panel and wing or if its a much bigger job?
I've still got my mig welder, but would only do small repairs years back, so would probably have to field the work out. Unfortuatley I won't have my garage much longer and not sure if I'll have one when I move. So would be great to get an MOT on it so I can park it on the road if needed (not ideal), unless I end up selling it (which I'd rather not).
Thanks
Luke

I think I’d get a wire wheel on that area go 5cm above the lower hinge and 10cm away from the A panel and see what it’s really like.
As it sits I think you could probably repair it without replacing the A panel.

You’ve already got a plate welded in the bottom there but it’s fairly topical of MK3 A posts.

Yep, agreed. Need to take it back and fully expose the surrounding area, but some reasurance there on the repair. I'll crack on with that.
Rest of the body is pretty sound. Outer sills were done when I first aquired the car way back in 2004 and it's spent more years in my garage, sorn on and off, than on the road. Will be good to get it on the road once again.

ok, so clearly far too optimistic. I got in there to expose the area and there’s the same situation with the top hinge. Plus a bit on the bottom, where it had previously been patched, but that in itself isn’t an issue to repair.
I've added the

Although you could slap a plate over that, i would be very inclined to remove the A panel and replace it all properly.

looking at the state of it, I was thinking the same. I can see a 'DOOR CHECK R/H PANEL GENUINE ALA6472GEN' and a 'INNER HINGE REPAIR PANEL R/H MSL41R', with the latter just being an overlay repair. I don't think I'd take on the work myself. I'm based in $urrey. Any idea on the cost of this type of repair? I'm pretty out of touch these days, so just trying to weigh up my options.

MSL41R Isn’t really an overlay repair but it does form a double thickness layer with ALA6472GEN.
It shouldn’t be more than a days work providing the inner sill isn’t completely naffed.
I don’t know what labour rates are up there but down here you’d be looking at £500 inc parts and labour.

ALA6472GEN Is a strengthening section that door hinge bolts to.

I agree with Tupers, shouldn't be more than a days worth of work BUT with the A panel off it will give you a better idea if anything else is lurking. The cold air ducting could be shrouding something around the top of the flitch so worth while having a gander there when everything is off.
Been down this very road with my clubby before i did a full body resto. A panel off, cut out any rot, replaced the scuttle closeout and did a localised repair around the fresh air vent before fitting a new A panel.
