Hi all

I’m relatively new to mini’s and I’m rebuilding the rear suspension on my van. Subframe is in, radius arm is fitted, new donut fitted and a standard strut / trumpet. When I jack up the bottom of the radius arm to try to fit the new shock to the wheel arch, the car starts to lift before I manage to get the top of the shock to enter into the arch.

I’ve tried searching for information on whether the van shockers are longer than a saloon but without any definitive answer.

So I’d be grateful if anyone with information on whether they are different lengths, if so a part number of the correct one and or where to purchase (UK), or a method of compressing the donut further to get the ones I have to fit into the arch so I can the nuts on. I was wondering if I should find a few fat friends to sit in the load area! 😉

Vans/pickups/estates had longer rear shocks.

but add weight to the rear to get yours to fit.

Pick ups had longer rear shocks? Would that explain why mine has a scary back end feel as pretty sure they are standard on mine

I've used ratchet straps to pull the arm up to the body rather than trying to jack them as there's seldom enough weight in the back.

Be aware too that the Van (Pick-up, Mini Moke and Moke) used a different trumpet to hat fitted in the saloon, at least up to about 86 when the saloon used the same one too.

Yes, Mini Moke, Moke, Vans and Pick-ups all had the same longer shock.

Do you have any information on the size difference?

The dimensions for the standard rear shock absorbers are different .

Saloon dimemsion from the fixing pin centre are Closed 261mm      Extended 385mm

Van and Estate dimensions mearured from the same datum are Closed 271mm    Extended 410mm.

As far as I am aware these sizes are correct and the 25mm extended difference will probably make all the difference when fitting.

The new donuts wil also ride higher for a while but will drop. If yku fit hilos it will give all the adjustment you need.

The Flanges between the Commercial and Saloon are a different dia - Saloon are 80 mm and Commercial 90 mm dia. The Commercial ones are also 3 mm longer.

Don't mean to hijack this thread. So I have the wrong shocks and doughnuts on the back of my PUP. If it's running lower than standard does that matter having standard length shocks

Thanks for the replies, I’m off on holiday for a couple of weeks so I’ll follow up on progress when I get a chance. Does anyone know of a UK source of the longer shocks?
