Hello

 

I have two M35J  starter motors which I would like to save. As you can see the insulation on the field coil  gone with the wind :)

 

My idea that I will using PTFE tape for insulation. Is it suitable for this purpose ?

 

 

Also the rear end of the shaft is worn. I have bush kits to replace but the shaft end will wobble in the new bush

 

Is it better to weld up the shaft and turn / grind to size ?  Or use a smaller bush ? I can find similar bushes with metric sizes

Have a look at 3M/Scotch tape #27. Apparently that is suitable for field coils. I actually have "field coil tape" on it's way to me currently. I have no idea what it actually is but it must be correct since it's what it's called.

Turning down the shaft and fitting a different bush should be easier than trying to weld it up.

I repair everything that I can but I don't think I would bother with that one.

Durite have a cotton field windind tape available in two widths, 13mm and 16mm , Re 0-527-00 and Re 0-528-00 respectively, but for the quanity you would need I would go to an electrical motor refurb shop and enquire if you could buy a length from them.

 

As regards the shaft I see no reason why it could not be machined down and a bespoke undersize bearing fitted, but you will need access to a lathe for this.

Looking at the state of the parts, it likely more cost effective to buy a new starter.

However, if you need the original parts, buy the new starter anyway and use its contents to repair your unit. The cost of the internals are much cheaper than buying them separately.

If I add local customs + VAT + shipping cost that won't be that cheap

There are starter motors off other vehicles that fit. That's if you don't need it to look original.

Thanks for the advice. Some patience needed but one coil is re-insulated with tape #27

Well done for taking this on. The first job I needed to do when recommissioning my car a few years ago was the starter. I took it all apart... and then just gave up and bought a new one :)

I have one of those from my 1980 1275GT in a box - I replaced with a new one as the car is far from original anyway but was working fine when removed. 

 

I was planning on selling all parts I have replaced as a job lot in due course but if anyone needs a starter just shout!

I was just thinking of this the other day as I was rebuilding a starter.

What I'm still wondering is if that is how the field coils were originally taped? It seems odd to me and would've been difficult to do.

More than likely, the shaped wire was bought in pre-taped or it was taped by Lucas before winding the coils.

I pulled apart the winding carefully. I cut ~1m length pieces from the tape and overlapped it with the next piece
