I'm not sure whether this topic is SPi specific, or also applies to other Mini models. My car is a "Japanese SPi" version. That's why I place it in this section of the forum.

While driving the car I notice that sometimes the SRS light on the dash board comes on. This happens at irregular time intervals. The SRS light comes on, stays on for a few seconds (2 seconds perhaps) and then switches off. The car runs fine, there are no other issues or weird things going on at that time.

What can be the cause for the SRS light to illuminate while driving?

P.S. I know that the SRS light illuminates when you start the car: this indicates that the airbag module is doing its diagnostics. It stays on for approx. 5 seconds before it switches off.

SRS light coming on or staying is often just caused by a poor connection somewhere in the SRS systems wiring loom. A suitable code reader if available can sometimes help pinpoint the location. In my modern BMW MINI it usually illuminates due to loose connectors to the seat belts or the seat airbags because they are subjected to general wear and movement in daily use or when the wires get knocked under the seats while vacuuming the carpets!

As mab01uk says the SRS light staying on in modern cars is usually the electrical connectors under the seats coming loose due to being knocked or just the constant back and forth, especially in three door cars. Not sure what, if any, connectors are in the mpi or imported Minis.

Thank you mab01uk and humph for your responses. So I should be researching how the entire airbag system is composed, what kind of sensors, actuators and modules are involved. Hopefully that would help me identify where connectors and ground straps are located. I haven't done any of that yet so this will be a new journey.
