Hi,  998 A+ im putting back together from boxes of bits (with quite a lot of stuff missing as im finding out!) as supplied by PO.

The car has an aluminium radiator and custom heavy duty pipework.

On the top of the rad, next to the cap is I a thin pipe / spigot which looks like it needs a hose on it to head to an expansion tank.

I dont have an expansion tank in my box - is one needed?   I know the later cars had one in the wheel arch, but was unsure about earlier ones, and the parts diagrams dont really give many clues.

If I dont need a tank, do I need to connect a hose to it and route it down and out?

Thanks!

Regards of the age or how much or little they have been modified, a separate header / expansion tank is always a good thing to fit.

There is some useful information and advice in this TMF thread linked below on adding an expansion tank to a Mini:-
