Hi all,

I have found myself in a weird situation where I have a HIF38 and a Hif44. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a difference between the two as far as internals goes? The HIF38 is one of those odd ones that is actually 1 3/4 (44mm) and the only reason I know that its a HIF38 is by the air filter flange. The HIF38 was in better condition than the HIF44 so since the openings were the same size I installed it instead of rebuilding the HIF44.  Is there any value to to rebuilding and installing the HIF44 or should I just stick with the HIF38 if the openings are the same?

Which engine do you have? The HiF 44 could be too big for a 998 it that's what you have.

A HIF38 should have the smaller diameter jet and needle (the 3 digit needle code should start with an “A” instead of “B”)

I’ve never heard of a 44mm HIF carb with a flange to suit HIF38. There were earlier versions of the HIF carbs that were HIF4 and HIF6 and possibly it is an older carb body?

I have come across one of these . It is 38mm on the manifold side but from the butterfly to filter it tapers out to 44mm and you use the HIF44 air filter. Its like a short ram stack and ideal if you fit a stub stack inside the filter.

Depending on your engine size the 1275 definitely runes better on the HIF44.

I am running a 1310, Cooper s camshaft. So the HIF44 I assumed would be better if it can flow more fuel and air. I will have to get a rebuild kit for it. Thanks for all the quick replies.

I don't suppose you have a picture of such a beast do you? Just I've never heard of such a thing, do you know what engine they were fitted to?
