Gearbox Layshaft Bind

Hello;  I've never rebuilt a gearbox so learning along the way.  Besides bearings, gaskets etc. I purchased a new layshaft.  All parts are for a remote 1128 gearbox.  When removing the old layshaft it was worn where the bearing is located at the larger end of the shaft, and had some resistance when removing from the case.  I tried dry fitting the new shaft and it goes about 3/4 the way into the gearbox then there is a bind and the only way to install it is by using a hammer.  I tried the old shaft, same thing.  I will check the shaft for straightness.  I'm assuming this part of the case can be line bored?  I know the shaft gets turned and locked into place with the plate made for that assembly but pretty sure it should turn freely without binding.

The shaft doesn't have to turn freely per se, but it should fit fairly easily, though, as long as the shaft is right - straight and on size - , there's no issue with the shaft needing some light assistance to be fitted.

Can I suggest first try turning the shaft around the wrong way and test fit the big end in to the big bore in the case and do the same with the small end. This may guide you to which end has an issue.

Given that you seemed to get the old one out OK, I'm suspecting the new shaft may have an issue.

Thanks!  I tried the shaft at its respective ends on the gearbox, it was ok.  I put a little grease on the gearbox journals. that seemed to help.  I was mistaken it was the small end of the shaft that had wear from the smaller layshaft bearing.

It usually is the small end on these that goes. The other end is well supported on 2 bearings.

I have found with some new shafts, where they are slotted near the end, they can catch on them.
