Hi

I am in the process of preparing a mk1 Mini for appendix K racing.

I went to GoodWood revival last year where i saw this swiftune Mini.

I noticed that it neither have bonnet or boot straps, but instead it had some custom made bonnet lock. I don't remember the design and Swiftune are not selling it, so I am considering manufacturing it myself.

Does anyone have pictures or can describe the setup?

Also, i am not sure how this is approved since in the Appendix K it is stated that it must be replaced by outside safety fastenings

Bonnet.

Must be adequately fastened. The series production lock must be removed or made inoperative and be replaced by outside safety fastenings.

From Period G specifications onwards, at least two additional safety fasteners must be fitted for each of the bonnet and boot lids.

The interior locking mechanisms will be rendered inoperative or removed.

Found some photos online, it doesn't show exactly what they've done, but it gives a clue. Looks like an R clip to secure a version of the standard bonnet locking pin, along with a relocated version of the secondary latch. There may be more, but I've not spotted it yet.

Looks like they’re just using a longer pin in place of the standard on and an R clip though the grill to lock it down.

Well done, I'd not found that photo. I've not found any clues as to how they've secured the boot lid either. I also looked at the Swiftune built Alex Brundle mini as that bonnet appears to be secured in the same fashion, but didn't come up with anything.

MagnusMJ - I dont know the race regs for Appendix K - but did run a car in Historic Category in Australia where the requirement (i think) was just for a secondary form of fastening.  For me and the officials - the visual inspection of the strap(s) was part of the overall preparation for getting on the grid. Not answering your question - sorry but providing something for you to think about.

If you do your race meets on your own this checklisting/ ritual is so important -

Example

fuel cap on , wheel nuts all checked , tyre valves all capped ( in the regs in australia) bonnet straps in place and believe it or not doors shut and then belts/ hans device / helmet

So for me the visual or outside safety fastenings are comforting.

I have been on the dummy grid and asked the marshals to check the strap a number of times if my preparation/ ritual was interrupted and I couldn't remember whether done or not

Please note this is not any commentary of the legalities of Mr Swift's  car this is just my preference. The willow is always immaculately presented and a credit to the team.
