I've had the engine out for a while doing various bits. I also installed a "new old stock" gearchange housing with new bushes and rubber mounts. Had a new change rod made up since they are NLA. All fitted back ok, the gearchange feels very tight, I put this down to the new parts plus I also installed a KAD quick change, new.

One thing I did notice, after connecting it all up underneath I forgot to install the reverse switch, so I undone the two rod house rubber mounts from within the car and dropped the unit to make it a bit easier to get the switch in. When I went to put it back, the holes in the body for the mounts were out by about 1/4 inch! I had to undo the nut that holds the steady bar to the gearbox to allow the housing to move back far enough for the mounts to line up with the holes in the body, then do up the nut.

Would this be causing any unwanted stiffness in the gear change?

Might be just I've not driven it in ages and fitted a short shift lever plus installed new parts with all new bushings etc.

Ta.

The easiest thing to start 'testing' would be to slacken the bolts on the Quick Change to see if it makes any difference.

Also Depending on if you have an upper engine steady as well- there can be a bit of a swing range - sometimes tilting forward to enable the carbie/filter not to clunk on rear firewall puts the bottom out of whack - this may create a tad of pressure on a particular gear - just as the rubber gearstick cover can actually stop the gear from throwing home.  ( I think you probably just have to play around - it wouldn't surprise me if a rubber mount is different thickness to orig etc)

I’ve got 3 engine steadies, two lower and one upper. They are all static as in no threaded adjustment. I’ll see what I can do with the shift house.

Hmm, never noticed but I labelled every nut and bolt when I put them in parts bags I keep for big ish jobs like engine removal, so they went back where they came from. If they were not correct to start with, then they are back in the place I took them off..!

I did have a play around with the remote housing yesterday afternoon in the searing heat, and it moved forward a tiny bit when I loosened off the bracket bolts and then nipped them up again. Also took a few "bands" off the rubber gaiter that squashes up against the oil seal at the gearbox end and the shift does seem to engage more, but still feels tighter than before, but as said above, all the bushings and mountings are new, as are the actual rod(s) and pins, and its been re-fitted with a new type Kad qucik shift!

Think I just need to drive it and get all the moving parts kind of bedded in.

For what it’s worth i’ve installed a couple of Kad levers the last month or so, one on my own car, and they take some miles to bed in.
