Hi,

I am looking to sell my old 12 inch minilites, inc spare.

I have fitted 10 inch minilites, I'm not sure whether i should keep the 12 inch spare to use in emergency or if they would sell better as 5 wheels?

i can think of an issue having to adjust the hi-lo slightly to get the wheel in the arch, if i got a flat tyre?

Or should i look for a cheap 10 inch minilite and throw a budget tyre on it?

Nathan

I would definitely find a spare the right size, for safety if nothing else

and probably 5 will sell better, that's one extra to choose from when selecting the main 4 (or just being able to rotate tyres instead of changing them back again after repair)

A spare is only for temporary use. You just fit it while getting the tyre fixed there for it does not need to be the same and you would not adjust anything.

if you are wanting a spare wheel to use as an occasional main wheel get one the same spec.

You won't get 25% more for a set of 5 than a set of 4, but a set of 5 is more likely to sell.

If you need a spare, you'll be glad of any wheel that fits,  to get you home.

i did think selling as five would be better, I would prefer that if buying

The 12 inch plus tyre is noticeably bigger, I'm sure it would get me home, but not ideal

Ill see what i can find 10 inch wise plus tyre just to throw in the boot.

thanks for the feedback

Just look out for a matching Minilite - I have a 10 inch Revo plus tyre in the boot - fits perfectly in the wheel well and the same as the wheel/tyres fitted.  I doubt a 12 inch wheel would fit in there?

An odd size would be kinder to the diff if fitted on the back & compatible wheel nuts are also a consideration. The wheel size shouldn't be a clearance issue unless you're running with very low clearance, it should be less than a cm's difference. A standard 145/10 would be well within the tread depth of having the same rolling circumference.

As others have said the a 12" spare would be ok if you do wish to retain it, as the overall size is little different to a 10" wheel as the tyre profile/height is reduced on a 12" Mini wheel. Also why the 12" wheel fits in the boot floor well ok. However a matching spare will mean you can drive at normal speeds, etc.

The few modern cars that still have even a spacesaver spare wheel are normally a different size to the normal road wheels. eg. My R50 MINI has a 15" steel spacesaver spare wheel below the boot floor but has 17" alloy wheels.

Yeah it's not going to cause instant death or anything you just need to drive it carefully.
I just prefer full size spares with the same rim etc so you only have to jack it up and change the wheel once every time

As Ethel mentioned, the same size wheel will be kinder on the diff, especially if it has to be driven any distance.

I prefer a matching spare, for no other reason that it matches.

Any 10 inch steel wheel will do as a spare, much better than the so called space saver spares on modern cars.
