I went to see one of my mates today, apart from being a demon painter he's also an electronics buff, he has a side line in repairing knackered MIG welders. He told and showed me something I have never seen written or mentioned before. He started a car with a dead battery using a MIG welder!!!
He disconnected the wire feed, took the shroud off the torch, hooked the lead up, touched the torch onto the battery terminal, he pulled the trigger, I hit the key, and bugger me it started.

They are basically a DC Power Pack. a TIG will do the same.

While it will work, I wouldn't make a habit of it !

I wouldn`t do it on anything with an ECU or retro fitted electronic ignition.

Likewise you can use a battery as a stick welder.

Some mig welders (Kemppi) actually had a setting to use them as a jump starter and battery charger.

The issue with using welders not designed for this is that most have a voltage far too high. Not so much of an issue now with inverter welders as they have more adjustment.

The car was a 14 plate fiesta, everything worked as normal, as he said " know what you doing, know your welder"
