Hello

I have this timing cover and pulley for my 850. There is no timing mark on any of them but I would like to file one on the pulley and spot weld a scale on the cover.

I found a drawing on an MG forum for the position of the pulley mark.

Is it the same on the Mini ?

Are the timing marks on the flywheel no longer visible ?

Yes they are visible but they hard to see after I will install the engine

Now the engine is on a stand, the crank is in TDC at #1.

I would forget about trying to reproduce the OE set up.

i would also invest in a timing light with adjustable dial on it.

make/buy a pointer and then mark up TDC to suit.

have a look at https://www.q1classi...5-based-engines

I made my own pointer, then set the engine to true tdc using the dial gauge and timing disc method, then filed a notch in the crank pulley to align with the pointer at tdc.
You will need to use a dial back timing light though.

I made this little contraption which after removing the cover from the wok then use the bolts to attach it to the housing and it’s easily viewed from above with a timing light. Patent pending!!

The MG ones are in the wrong position. They are seen by looking under the car.

Simply put the engine at TDC according to the flywheel and make a mark wherever you want. There is no need for a scale when using a dial back timing light.

Sorry, here's the factory one from the early 1960's!

At the NEC sports car show, a few years back, a chap was selling those with an AAA cell behind the mirror and a diode to light the flywheel.

Thanks for your advices

Finally I found a bad cover from which I removed the timing mark and spot welded to my cover

(The pulley isn't fixed yet)
