Engine has been rebuilt recently including new alternator, and is running genrally fine , though timing has wandered a few degrees  judging by spark plugs in first 1000 mile of running in.

But when I start her up , it sounds like the battery is flat on the first full turns - slow crank  and now attempting to fire. Then by 3rd or 4th pull , the engine fires up fine.

Starts easily when warm no problem. But also noticed my smiths voltmeter shows no voltage when engine is cold , until the engine starts. If I start it from warm the voltmeter reads something between 0 and 15 v  depending on how long it has been left  as far as I can tell.

Anyone got `nu ideas in starting problem ? Solenoid ?

Should the voltmeter show battery voltage as soon as ignition is switched on ?

Its a 998cc 1989 with lucas sports coil and power spark electronic ignition

I would check all battery and earth connections including the start relay for corrosion.By check I mean dismantle and clean.Hard cranking can be caused by too advanced ignition.Steve..

Check the voltage when cranking (disable the ignition). Check the timing with a timing light.

For the purpose of a quick test, yes.

Ideally the battery voltage is also tested as well as the coil to detect if there is any voltage drop. Nothing should be below 9.6v and there should be less than 0.5v drop between each battery post and the starter.
