Everything disconnected except Speedo and mounts decided to take the drive shafts out complete with discs all the ball joints and steady disconnected I can’t uncouple the top ball joint although it’s loose do I have to put the cone compressor on it to reduce the tension or is there another way I can’t lever the top arm up to much pressure on it . Am I doing something wrong

have you removed lower arm bump stop rubber? should be able to get bar under damper mount on top bar and lever up slightly. I usually split pot joints then pull them out as engine is raised do one side then the other by jiggling engine about. old crane was fixed so had to move car and came up with this so stuck with it for years

Just buy one of these, leave the ball joint nut flush with the top of the thread, tighten the splitter up so the joint is under tension, give the top arm a wack with a decent hammer, and the joint will release, if not do the splitter up a bit tighter and have another go. I'm presuming you have already got the bottom joint off and clear.

I have one of those used many times on other cars I have split the top taper but cannot get the arm up high enough to disengage the threaded part on the taper I have removed the rubbers and put small wooden wedges in will try and get a bar in tomorrow and see if I can lift the top arm enough to clear the threaded part

Disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower arm the the top ball joint will drop out of the taper in the upper arm. No need to remove the rebound rubber, that's likely to make it slightly more difficult.

Like imack said, get all of the lower stuff out of the way, that's your best bet. Maybe even disconnect the steering arm. Without fully compressing the rubber donut, there is no way that the upper arm is going to move.

What about CAREFULLY, jack up the car on the upper control arm.  It will compress as the weight of the car is transferred to the top arm.

Looks like if I can’t jack it up slightly I will have to get the cone compression tool out thanks one and all

I use a ratchet strap from top shock mount, around top arm and back to shock mount. Then tighten. That'll raise the top arm enough to push down and pull the ball joint out of the way.

Which of these if any did you end up utilising for your repair?
