Apparently the real-life inspiration behind a key part of the plot for the new film 'F1' starring Brad Pitt, is Lotus F1 driver Martin Donnelly's terrifying career-ending crash at Jerez in 1990.

F1 The Movie - Official Trailer - Warner Bros. UK & Ireland:-

Revealed: the harrowing real-life crash that inspired Brad Pitt F1 movie (Motorsport magazine).
"The basic storyline has been known for a while — a driver long absent from the top level of the sport returns to the worst team on the grid to mentor a young rookie. The F1 trailer has filled us on a few more details, such as the initial tension between the two team-mates and there was also a brief glimpse of a scene that provides confirmation of how another important plot point is rooted in a real life event.
From the early stages of filming it’s been common knowledge that Brad Pitt’s character Sonny Hayes had raced in F1 in the 1990s before a major accident derailed his career.
It was also rumoured that the crash was based on that suffered by Martin Donnelly in practice for the Spanish GP at Jerez on September 28, 1990, and which saw the Ulsterman suffer severe injuries.
The fact that the Donnelly was spotted in the fictional Apex GP team’s garage at last year’s British GP appeared to confirm that he was in the loop.
The trailer indicated not only that Donnelly’s accident forms part of the story, but also how accurately the production has attempted to recreate it.
A brief snippet shows Hayes in a pit garage with a Camel-liveried Lotus 102 similar to the car driven by Donnelly. On his yellow overalls Hayes even carries the logo of Martin’s personal sponsor Cellnet, which stuck with him after his F3 days.
Director Joe Kosinski didn’t have to use a 1990 Lotus – Hayes could have been driving any generic nineties F1 car – but the fact he did so reflects the overall quest for realism and detail. Should anyone watching the film suggest that the sight of a driver thrown from a broken chassis is far-fetched, Kosinski can cite Jerez, and say that it really happened.
The precise context of the crash in the storyline and what unfolds afterwards remains to be seen. What is clear is that thanks to a little Hollywood magic Hayes makes a full recovery and is able to resume his career in other categories, before eventually getting the call for a surprise F1 comeback. The real Donnelly was not so fortunate, and never had that second chance."

Has there been a racing film worth watching since Grand Prix?

There's a lot of parallels with events in F1, not least the 'pyjama photos' from certain Team Principals.... I've booked to see it on Monday, should be fun. I like F1 and I ike Brad Pitt, what could possibly go wrong?

I watched it in IMAX last Monday as a Cineworld Cardholder "special". It's almost exactly as I expected; good fun in places, lots of Hollywood plot points: his big crash that haunts him, jeopardy, cool older guy putting the young upstart in his place and the "magic turnaround".

However, it doesn't play on the other drivers much; in fact they're barely mentioned in passing in the commentary. The focus instead is on the (fictional) Apex team, plus its Principal, Ruben, played by Javier Bardem - a former racer and teammate of Sonny Hayes, Pitt's character. The real plus point in the film is Kerry Condon as Kate, the team's technical director. Brad Pitt is Brad Pitt, giving off an air of "cool" whenever he is on screen.

If you can, it's worth a watch in IMAX as the racing scenes are especially good. The story is a bit contrived, and some of the accident scenes are a bit OTT and obviously CGI, but overall it's a good watch. It's no Rush, that's for sure, but it's fun enough. If you're looking for an in-depth look at F1, go elsewhere, but for an Action-Packed evening of high speed fun, it's not bad. 7/10.

Watched F1 for over 40 years (loved it in the 80s, 90s, 00s).  Been to Spa, Monza, Silverstone.  Doubt I'll spend money to watch this though.  F1 was better before all that mattered was the commercial side (later quali and race starts to milk the fans at the circuits), have multiple races in the US and Arab states rather than the historic tracks.  Fear this might be my last year avidly watching it.

Sadly I am not a great fan of the BBC or trust its opinions on anything anymore....and that review is only one BBC reviewers opinion, so will still give the film a watch.

Well I watched it yesterday, not a bad story (it's clearly not real) and the cinematography is very good. The car scenes are exciting. If you're an F1 fan then it's all ridiculous however I still enjoyed the film and it was worth a watch.

Anything that promotes the use of internal combustion engines in motorsport has surely got to be a good thing? 😁

watched it Sunday and was dissappointed, sure expected the overly dramatic cgi of any off track moments and the movie world story line. as a long long time F1 fan found overly simplistic commentary for dummies by crofty and brundle annoying and rachel brooks made to look clue less at press pen. after much hype about how realistic the on track action was, coaching from real track engineers etc. and after seeing them filming at F1 events all year even the normal on track action was dramatised and cgi enhanced, and cameos by other drivers and team principles was clumsy and in the case on Toto Wolff (merc.) near the end cringe  worthy and reminded me of top gun back in the 80'S (scene with ice man at maverck at the end).

luckillly didn't feel as long as it was as plot bimbled on and other half enjoyed it, just if you like F1 just go with it and don't expect much.

Funny you say that Cooper, and also similarly your quote Stuart, as Mark Kermode had similar thoughts…
And this is not from BBC, entirely independent these days.
