Hi All,

I've just started the engine up for the first time after doing quite a bit of work including rebuilding the head and adding a retrosport timing chain cover (the one with a breather)

I finally got to start the engine today, and I was starting to adjust the timing when I noticed oil flowing stright out of the timing cover breather! It wasn't just some oil fumes it was heavily flowing out.

There is no leak from the timing cover seals at all just the breather.

So question is how buggered is it and is there any ideas on what could be the issue? Thinking for this one I need to get a mechanic out to check it out, but without someone specialising in Minis its maybe not looking good.

Thanks!

Its a 1275 and I recently did a compression test and had 135 psi on all cylinders (dry test)

Assuming the oil levels ok, I'd suspect you may have blocked the two oil return drillings in the main bearing caps with sealer.

New oil separator, it came with the retrosport timing cover

So I'm hoping I jumped the gun and panicked a bit too early, I had installed a new (ebay) dip stick, when I compare it with the original the levels are different so I think I filled too much oil. I replaced the dip stick with the old original A+ dipstick and drained a tiny bit of oil and started it again and didn't have any overflow (yet)

Here is a video. I've taken the filter off in the video and had a bottle to catch any oil, but from a quick run no oil yet.

I'll need to do a longer test run tomorrow to confirm though, but I am hoping this was just the case.

Also if it sounds rough/not tuned, its a fresh carb and dizzy, so I've not had it properly tuned yet.

Thanks!

I don't know the Timing cover and engine plate specifically , and it does look like the oil level adjustment has remedied the situation - but does it have stainless steel wool in the breather body itself( is that the separator?) I side with Nick in believing those pretty end cap breathers are all about bling without much function .  Much less catchy on the eye but plumb it to a catch can. Unless you are doing 8000 rpm I wouldn't expect to see much vapour ending up in the can.

Yeah it has the steel wool in the breather.

The original rocker cover had a breather on it, and the new MED cover I have added (needed to clear the new roller tip rockers) does not have one, Is it maybe also possible there was also too much crank case pressure without that additional breather?

I really don't know so I'm just throwing out ideas while hoping it was the oil level. I'll do some more testing later today
