We are trying to fit new races into the new upright hubs on the front of our classic 1989 mini. We have watched all the videos where a few taps on a drift makes the race slip into place, this is not the case. Having spent all afternoon bashing it with a hammer it hasnt moved at all. There are people on the web suggesting freezing the race and heating the hub, anyone got any advice please?

Before diving in the deep end, what bearings have you got ?
There should be a brand and number on the outer cup.

If a bearing goes even slightly skewed , then it will be a git , to get in place ,
You can check with a depth gauge , or similar
as I'm sure you already have , check the surfaces are very clean & scratch/mark free ,
Don't be tempted to use the inner race to hit on - it will damage it
I use the old bearing outer as a drift and check for square-ness on inserting it ,
you can heat the hub & chill the bearing , but I've found myself rushing to get the bearing in if I do that .
was the bearing a genuine Timken ? are they exactly the same size -
I've just fitted minispares cheaper alternatives , but now I have a bit of slack in it , even thou it was well seated ,
I intend to run it & Retorque it , to see if the spacer moves a bit more (fingers crossed)
It was a git to get started , but was ok after the first few mm , no heat or chill ,
there are a few fake timkens out there , but if you bought it of a dealer you should be ok ,
You could take it to a garage and see if they will use a press to get it into place ,
Or anyone with a press setup , it shouldn't cost much if they have the time ,
as above , loads of Youtube video's on the subject , describe it better than I can ,
Best of luck .
