Leak From Pulley
#1

Ive just had my engine machined and then rebuilt it myself (a 23 yo with no experience at all) and it runs great however, i lost about 4 litres out of my pulley and it sprayed everywhere in a short 15 min drive last night, the pulley is slightly out of line but would that cause so much oil to leak? Its literally a constant stream out of it
It only happens when the cars running too as it had oil in for about 18 hours with no drips as i finished up the cooling system and put the drive shafts in etc
Any help would be appreciated or if anyone knows anyone that could fix it local to s45 that would be even better (obviously will pay for the work required)
I have a video of it doing it but cant seem to add that here

4 litres, Wow. did the oil light come on ?
By removing the starter and locking the flywheel, slackening the fan-belt, jacking the nearside front, removing the wheel, draining the water and removing the radiator, it is quite easy to undo the crank bolt and remove the timing cover.

Which pulley?
put the video on YouTube and link it.
if spraying most likely a oil galley plug.

Oil sensor didnt turn on which is a bit of a worry but it seems to work when it started and made pressure.d
Heres the video after stripping it down and a brief start so that nothing overheats

That's worse than the Amoco Cadiz, are you sure you fitted the oil seal at all? if you did, get a new Viton one and check to see if the pulley has a groove in it where the oil seal runs, if it has you need a new pulley as well.

From your video it looks like the oil is passing by the oil seal.
Did you centre the cover before tightening the fixing bolts ?, it is possible to to fit the cover where the seal is not central or aligned with the pulley.
You will have to strip out the radiator, remove and inspect the crank pulley for any damage to the seal face.
Then remove the timing chain cover and inspect it for any cracks that or distortion.
Rectify any problems, if you find any, clean up the gasket faces, fit a new seal and gasket.
Fit the cover and leave the fixings loose, fit the crankshaft pulley, centre the cover on the pulley and nip the fixings you can get to. remove the pulley and finally tighten the bolts in the right sequence and to the correct torque.
Refit the crankshaft pulley, check the oil level, you could possibly test for an oil leak before fitting the radiator.
Hope this helps.

Some great suggestions there.
Check that the seal hasn't torn and that there's no cracks in the cover.
Also, I suspect there's a bigger issue here that the rings aren't sealing and the crankcase is being pressurised to be spraying that much oil at such low engine revs.

The seal is badly split
An oil gallery plug is leaking and the oil is running down until it gets to the seal/ pulley where it’s thrown out.
The casing is cracked or split.
It seems unlikely that crankcase pressure would make oil blow out of the seal like that.
Did you fit the oil-thrower-disc just inside the timing cover?
Is the pulley shaft damaged in a way which could cause the seal to split?
If you suspect crankcase pressure to be part of the problem, run the engine at tickover with the oil filler cap removed and see if the rate of oil loss from the pulley area reduces.

Is there a level of pressure expected during the run in process?
Could this be caused by ignition timing being slightly off or carb not dialled in yet?
Thanks for all your help too i appreciate the time you’ve all taken to help me:)
Thanks,
Steve
