Is there a way to tell if a gearbox has been rebuilt by Guessworks? I'm avoiding bothering John if the answer is simple.
The background to this is that some years ago I bought a spare Mpi engine/gearbox from one of the small independent Mini outfits, the engine is standard but the gearbox had supposedly been rebuilt by John. The complete unit was a good price so selling the engine alone would recoup what I spent if the gearbox doesn't turn out as expected.
I'll soon have my engine refresh finished so it'll be time to turn my attention to the gearbox, but having my current 'box rebuilt is really a bigger cost than I want, I've already spent way more on my rebuild than I'd planned to (nothing new there) but getting the gearbox wrong would be a big error. I've never tackled a gearbox build myself so going down that route would be totally new.
I'd read somewhere that John always fits cross-pin diffs when he does a rebuild, I'd also sort of expect it would likely have a central oil pickup, but I'm not sure about any of this. Currently the unit is still all bolted up as I bought it.
Any thoughts?
Stu.
