Hi all

I bought these

https://www.thelittl...ar-parts-r.html

On the top mount there are 4 washers. On my old ones there were only 2.

What do I do?

There are two "washers" and two "locators" - ones I have seen, typically the locators are slightly thinner gauge material if you look closely.

So in order, on top of the shock, you place in this order:

1) "Washer"

2) Rubber mount

3) Locator (with raised side UP to locate into the hole in the wheel arch)

4) The wheel arch  !!!

5) Locator (with raised side DOWN to locate into the hole in the wheel arch)

6) Rubber mount

7) "Washer"

8) Nut or Nuts depending  - I have had dampers with one Nyloc or two plain nuts (often one of these is a half nut) for locking purposes

Ok, thanks for that. The only thing is, I seem to have a washer built in to the top mount, on top, in the boot. is that possible or is it an old one just stuck?

I'd see how well the rubbers sit in the body. I wouldn't want metal to metal contact it would let the damp in to start corrosion.

...There is a welded on reinforcement.

I don't like the sound of a washer either side of the top mount either. They would be squashed to the mount by the rubber bushes though.

Sounds like an old one that's stuck.

As said washer on each side of each rubber. There’s also a “washer” in the top of the seat.

The rubbers have a locating lip on them which should squish in the mount.. then the washers after the rubbers compress the two together...

Leave out the two centre washers, you don't want metal to metal. From the shock upwards it's washer, rubber with lip upwards, top mount , rubber with lip downwards, washer and top nut. In that order.

As above, the rubbers (on decent shocks) should have a locating ring moulded in to centre the rod in the hole enabling only the cupped washers to be used, top and bottom of the assembly.

If washers are fitted between the rubbers and the hole in the wheel arch there’s a high chance they’ll eventually start rattling.

Seems that the general consensus is not to use the locators. I'm not precious; pretty sure I've had dampers with them and without with no obvious difference (to me) but I'm always happy to follow the majority view so I'll leave them out from now on.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
I still don't know how to install them.
There are no locators on the rubbers, they are on the 2 inner washers.
Maybe I could use the old rubbers?
Is the top nut tightened to a torque or just until it's all tight and under stress?

I've seen 2 types of rubbers for these - the plain type like what you have and those that have a 'locator' cast in to the rubbers.

The plain types I've found have the types of washers that you also have to locate them. I can't say I've had any issues from these.

I think a test assembly is in order. See what makes the best fit. If you used them as supplied you could apply some sealant between the extra seats and the wheel arch.

A kit is available, but the length of the threaded end of the damper is a factor too.

Install as per the picture you have attached but obviously putting them onto the rear of the car so the bottom three pieces go below the wheel arch and the rest goes above in the orientation shown in the picture.

The "locators"  ("locating washer" might explain better for you) have a raised piece that "should" locate into the hole in the wheel arch

I usually tighten the nut until I have compressed the rubbers to about half their free width
