Hello guys,

Ive been rebuilding a '79 998, which has had a lot, lot of work done by the PO.   It looks like it was professionally done originally.

I got everything incuding the gearbox in dozens of boxes of bits ive been methodically going through learning as I go.

I dont have much experience of Mini carb cars.  My daily is an SPi, so havent messed with older Mini carbs, tuning, timing etc. Excellent resources here, but I need a little help / advice please...

The engine is back in, and it is running - but very lumpy especially at idle.  Ive been trying to sort the timing - have been through all the vids, texts here but I have questions...

My car has an HS4 carb, it also has electronic ignition, Pertronix coil and the dizzy is a Lucas but cant see a model number - but it looks like it has some number scratched into to it.  Its not clear, but I think 100 AYP on one bit and 11/96 on another (see the pic)    Also it does not have a vaccuum connection.

Ive searched for and found an "Aldon 100AYP" but I dont have any aldon markings on mine.

All the vids/articles seem to talk about blocking the vaccuum pipe - but I dont have that.

With engine warm, and at about 1100rpm (any lower it starts to stall) Ive set the idle timing to approx 11 degrees, and it idles just over 1000 slightly lumpy, when you rev it the revs drop to nearly a stall, but back off the revs for a second then try again and it revs fine to over 4000 - so there is a huge flat spot from idle - not sure if its the carb or timing - I suspect the timing?

I havent done / looked at the 4000 rpm timing yet

Choke and throttle cables brand new.

- So do you guys think its the timing out, or something wrong with the carb?

- Any idea what the dizzy model / scratched on marks mean?

- How do I find out the curve / what the timing should be?

I have a bog standard timing light.

Thanks for any advice.

Do you know what engine mods it has?

The Aldon 100AYP is for camshafts such as the Piper 270/285, Kent 266/276 and 286. Perhaps it has one of these fitted IF the distributor has been bought to match.
