Hi all,

Putting my rear suspension back together with new knuckle joints and original trumpets I got into a mess and the knuckle joint pulled out of the cup. How do I get it back in and the rubber around it? It seems impossible to do.

OK, I'll give it a go. Then what sequence do I use for putting it back together without pulling the knuckle out again?

I gave up and assembled the joint before fitting to the car.

I'm probably impatient or lack skill but seldom have I been able to get the rubbers back on, though a few times I have succeeded.

Usually, I'll remove the cup, clean, grease and assemble it as a complete joint, then refit the assembly back in to the arm. With the non-genuine rubbers, these usually don't have enough movement in them to allow for the full angle of movement here before popping off. Before fitting them, I'll put some thin tie wire around the lip of the boot to hold it over the cup, before fitting the assembly.

Now I say here (simply !!) remove the cup. If the cup hasn't been out, this usually means destroying it as it'll be rusted in. When re-fitting these to the socket in the arms, I'll clean that sock bright clean with a wire wheel on the drill, then before fitting the new cup, grease the outside of them. I find doing this, even after 30 years the socket in the arm hasn't rusted and the cup will come out usually just by the 'grip' of the rubber or if not, then just by pulling the lip of the cup with my fingers.
