The seller claims they don’t need to be shimmed or preloaded.

I have used those bearings but still pre-load them.
In truth, none need to be pre-loaded, but if you'd like to get the best life from your crown wheel and pinion, you'd pre-load the bearings.

Just fitted a pair of those KSM bearings but I still did a preload.
I bought a pair of those bearings from https://www.bearingsrus.co.uk/
for £30.74 delivered.

What did you load them to?

Can't remember but probably would have been 2 thou as per recommended in Minispares RHP bearing description.

In the 1980s there were after market shim-less bearings.
They came with a wavy / crinkled shim that applied a temporary preload, and tightening the Diff Cover was supposed to hold the bearings in place.
Although they saved having to have a selection of shims, the only work they saved was measuring the gap with feelers as the flange had to be removed to discard the wavy shim.
