With the cylinder head off how do you find the correct t d c for no1 cylinder

One way is to put pushrods back in to No. 1 Cyl Exhaust and Inlet. These will both be at their lowest when the piston is up and both will be up (one more than the other) when you're on the tail end of the exhaust / start of the inlet strokes. They only move around 1/4" - 5/16" here in total.

So set the valve timing when the inlet stroke is just starting

 

No. 1 TDC is when it's firing.

Both Valves will be closed for that.
