Hi all

So my carbs timing was great but managed to get that running better. Took the car for a nice long drive and ran perfect. Left it for a month.

So when it came for a little day out it started very lumpy but after 5 mins of driving seemed to settle. We stopped after a while for food. Started again very lumpy then soon as I pull off it cut out. I could get it to start but any load would just cut out. Also idle would be all over the place then just drop and cut.

Is this most likely a carb issue? There has been a smell of fuel for quite some time, maybe a year or more. It use to be perfect, garage fitted a new exhaust, got somebody to tweak carb without checking with me and it was running fine, and it’s been smelling of fuel ever since.

I believe it to be a HS4 carb

So many questions.
1. HOW OLD WAS THE FUEL?
2. What needles you got?
3. Have the fuel air ratio been checked?
4. What colour are the plugs?
5. Any leaks at the manifold? (Check vacuumed take off maybe)
6. Have the fuel lines been upgraded with the new fuel that is in circulation?
7. How technical have you got so far?

Sounds like stale fuel, particularly if you use a higher octane fuel. It goes stale in 4 to 6 weeks in the tank.

It is most likely not an issue with the carb itself, an adjustment issue maybe. My guess (that's all we can do without being there) is that whoever messed with the carb made it way too rich and now you also possibly have an ignition fault.

Without being there, nobody can give you an answer. We can give suggestions but it is ultimately up to you to TEST if that is the issue.
