Hi All,

Sorry, non mini related, but I know you guys all have good knowledge!
My Dad has an old British bike and needs a pair of mudguards re chromed.
He’s been quoted £700 (southern England), which for the bike they belong to, makes it not economically viable.
Hence does anyone know of a tame chroming place, who are reasonable?
Thanks

First off there is chroming and flash chroming.

the first is expensive but gives a better deeper finish. The parts are first cleaned and preped then the are copper plated. And polished and maybe copper plated again to get the required surface finish. Then they are chromed.

splash is just direct to the steel. Not as long lasting and how a lot of shiny **** is made now.

Thanks Nick, sounds like the second version is what you get from the stuff you order for India, we know as my Dad ordered a tank from there (a few years back) and it was crap.

He would want the first option, for sure

Derby Plating Services Ltd has been recommended on the Mk1 Forum:-

From this Mk1 Thread:-

"Their work is superb, but you don't have pay for the privilege!"

Maybe new or used could be the way to go or just a universal stainless version.

Sadly it’s not quite as simple.

The design of this mudguard changed so much, and the copies are crap and badly fit.
Also he has acquired an identical copy of the exact part made for his bike, made as a one off, to exacting standards that has never been chromed, hence the need.

Maybe new or used could be the way to go or just a universal stainless version.

Sounds like he already knows what he wants & that it's going to cost.

Expect you could do some copper plating & polishing yourself to take some of the labour & cost out.

With these things sometimes contacting local mini or bike or classic car club is the way to go....

Bulk deals always keep everyone happier...

Done this with powder coaters on sets of wheels. One set of 10" rims quoted 250... then got pals onboard. 8 sets, each worked out to be £165... kept the powder coater boys busy for ages..
Would also tell the company no rush. Or your required time scale. That way if it takes longer you have a better place to be... or... platers/coaters can work your bits in a quiet time for them...
