I've had the thud/clunk when starting off and changing gear on my spi unless being very careful with the clutch and when travelling if throttle is eased off and on movement can be felt so I assumed it was the top engine steady bushes.  I've taken the steady bar off in 35 mins this afternoon expecting to see badly worn bushes and maybe metal to metal contact but they were one piece bushes and looked quite good to me. Some movement was possible with a screwdriver through the hole but not near as much as I expected.
Anyway new bushes arriving tomorrow so will put them in and hopefully be ok ? If not will do the bottom ones as well even though they look ok.

My question is would anything else make the thud I keep hearing ? so I can plan my next move if needed.

Thanks for any replies.

Failed bracket.

i would have grabbed the rocker cover and rocked the engine first then you could see what the issue was.

Failed bracket.

i would have grabbed the rocker cover and rocked the engine first then you could see what the issue was.

I did rock the engine first and found the front two bolts on the steady loose with a little movement so with fear that the threads were stripped I slowly tightened the bolts and they went in ok and reduced the movement but on a test ride the thud was reduced but still there. When I rocked the engine again the movement was much less but there was a slight sound from the front so figured it must be the bushes so took the steady off and ordered new bushes. The bracket is good so not that and on inspection of said bushes I'm not sure it is them but I will see when I fit the new bushes.

I just wondered what else could cause the thud on taking up drive and any pointers of where to look next if not the bushes.

Too much play in differential. Jack up one front wheel and put car in any gear. Turn wheel forward and back to see how much free play there is.

Also check engine mounts.

The new bushes came today and are poor quality and I was able to push both bushes in place with my thumb, the old ones are much better and a very tight fit so will put those back in and reassemble.
I'm not sure what to do next as disappointment with this car is very high at moment.
