I have this manifold to fit to my mini, https://imgur.com/gallery/Czk9iex
the mounting flange for the carb is at a steeper angle approx 25 degrees than current and from what I have read the float bowl (Hs4) will need to be adjusted to maintain it sitting horizontal. Am I correct in this thinking? Out of interest what would be the effect of having an out of level float bowl?

Think that manifold is for a 4 bolt carb, like  the HIF38 or 44 where the float chamber is under the carb body.

The diagonal holes match the Hs4 and it bolts up ok. I was thinking that maybe the HIF carbs are more suited to this manifold, maybe it is not suitable for the HS4

Not saying this is the one you want, but it is how you set the angle.

...never broke down goin up or downhill because the float angle was wrong.

Thanks Ethel, I don't understand it either - if it was critical then the bowl would be mounted on a pivot to maintain a constant level irrespective of the angle of incline

A couple of things to note about that manifold, if your mini is a late model or runs a servo, then you will need to drill and tap a hole for the take off, if your mini is an early model then you will need to get some adapters for the water heating as the stubs look like 5/8"

The float bowl on an HS4 (or other HSx) needs to be vertical because the drain hole is at the bottom. From this drain hole is the fuel fed into the carburetor. In order to make the HS4 compatible with multiple car makers' engines did SU come up with a design to adapt to the angle of the intake manifold. SU sells a family of so-called Float Chamber Adapters. See their product lineup here: https://sucarb.co.uk...r-adaptors.html

Got it, so as long as the float bown is positioned horizontal in relation to the car (by use of the correct adaptor)then the carb will work at the 30 deg angle.
