Any Tricks For Removing Broken Rear Exhaust Mount ?

Best Answer MiniFanGraham , 24 August 2025 - 02:13 PM

After another few hours of swearing and trying I finally got that damn both off.
it took an attack with neighbours reciprocating saw and some hammering with a chisel
20 mins later 2 new exhaust hangers fitted and a new u-clamp

one on right is the bottom one I was able to get angle grinder to cut it in 5 mins
one on left took 4-5 hours of effort to get it out

been try for a few hours to get broken rear exhaust mounting off the subframe
managed to get angle grinder of bottom one, but no room to get angle grinder to top one.

only have tiny bit of metal left on what is left of the exhaust mounting on outside of the subframe, can get socket ratchet on the nut on inside of subframe, but it just spinning
cannot get enough grip with monkey wrench to stop it spinning

anyone had this issue and know any tricks - without having to drop subframe, just to get one annoying thing out.

If you mean trying to grip a washer with torn rubber ?

I managed to drill a hole through the subframe from the inside, close enough to the nut, to also go through the washer.

I pushed a flathead nail through the hole to stop the washer rotating, and the nut sheared off.

You should be able to bend up what's left of the mount (the steel base) with a screw driver or the like, then you have something to grip with the vice grips.
