"The once-lost British brand Austin is remanufacturing its original 1959 Mini to race at the Goodwood Revival. For 2025, Goodwood’s St Mary’s Trophy will be opened to pre-1960s cars and Burlen, which owns the Austin nameplate (as well as SU, Amal, and Zenith Carburetors), has seized the opportunity to add some full-size Austins to its cute J40 pedal cars.
Lining up on the grid of the classic touring car race at the Revival will be two newly-built Austin Minis that are detailed recreations of the 1959 specification. The bodyshells and safety cages were supplied by Owens Fabrications in Wales, with Swiftune in Kent providing race-ready A-Series engines.
Wearing the original Austin grilles and winged badges, both cars are presented in Farina Grey, with off-white steel wheels and hand-painted race numbers on the doors, while they also ride higher than most racing Minis so that they’ll roll more in the corners, just as they would have done in the 1950s.
“It’s not really a new idea,” says Mark Burnett, Managing Director of Austin Cars Ltd. “Over at Burlen we’ve been producing a small range of classic car parts under the Austin name for years and in 2020 we set up Austin Pedal Cars, which is such a lovely natural path into the world of historic motoring for young people. The next step was always going to be the production of something for the grown-ups, something basic but fun, soul-stirring and memory inducing, no frills motoring, simply because we can. The Austin Cars cup of tea has been brewing for quite a while!”
At the helm of the Austin Minis will be former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok and endurance champion Darren Turner. You can follow the action live on Goodwood’s YouTube channel with part one of the St Mary’s Trophy taking place on Saturday, September 13 at 2:30 p.m. and part two on Sunday, September 14 at 6:00 p.m. (British Summer Time)."

Note the shells have been built by Endaf Owens to include the early big front floor pans.

Morris Mini Minors & Austin Sevens launched by BMC in August 1959 were seen racing 4 months later in December 1959 at the 'Brands Hatch Boxing Day' Car Races meeting.

This is the first time Minis have been eligible to compete in the pre-1960 running of the race. Goodwood’s editorial and content director Will Kinsman explained: ‘Our brief to Austin, Swiftune and Owens was to produce cars that look like “your Mum’s Mini, which you’ve borrowed for the day, painted a number on the side, and taken racing without telling her”. The attention to detail that has gone into creating cars that are distinctly different from the Cooper S-spec cars that we normally see racing is a credit to all concerned.’
